A request for the creation of a university in the national capital to honor the memory of Guru Teg Bahadur was filed on Wednesday in Lok Sabha.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, member of Shiromani Akali Dal, Ravneet Singh Bittu and Jasbir Singh Gill of Congress, and SS Ahluwalia of BJP recalled the sacrifice of the Sikh guru.

“I ask that a national university be established in Delhi to honor the sacrifices of Guru Teg Bahadur,” said Bittu, a member of Lok Sabha from Ludhiana.

Similar requests have been made by Harsimrat, a former Union minister who represents Bhatinda’s parliamentary seat.

Harsimrat also urged the Center to approach the United Nations to observe the day of martyrdom of Guru Teg Bahadur as the international day of religious freedom and tolerance.

Gill, a congressman from Khadoor Sahib, urged the government to establish a Guru Teg Bahadur handicraft institute in Sathiala in Amritsar district in honor of the Guru.

Gill said Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar has already sent a proposal to this effect and has given assurances that they will allocate land and buildings to establish the institute. The claims were made on the day of the martyrdom of Guru Teg Bahadur, who was executed by the Mughals for his refusal to convert to Islam.
