NBC will welcome the artist next week | national news

December 24 — Enid native and accomplished national artist John Newsom will return to Oklahoma next week to exhibit his latest piece.

Newsom, from Brooklyn, NY, grew up in Enid but said he always dreamed of traveling and exploring the world as a painter. His work has been exhibited in the United States, Europe and Japan, and permanent collections of his work are on display in top art museums.

NBC Oklahoma commissioned Newsom to create a work that will be featured in its 17th NBC Oklahoma Artist Series. Each year, NBC selects an Oklahoma artist to create an original piece of art, which is then displayed at every NBC location in Altus, Enid, Kingfisher and Oklahoma City, according to NBC.

The bank also reproduces the artwork on a limited number of prints, posters and postcards made available to customers.

NBC will host Newsom at Enid from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday for a reception to celebrate his work, titled “Homecoming.”

The painting was inspired by Newsom’s education in Oklahoma, filled with memories of miles traveled along the state’s open roads and prairies.

The oil painting on canvas features natural pieces of Oklahoma – with bison, scissor-tailed flycatchers, and Indian blanket flowers filling the scene.

“I wanted to create an iconic image using timeless designs from the Oklahoma landscape,” Newsom said. “The bison is a strong but contemplative plains animal. The scissor-tailed flycatcher is the state bird of Oklahoma, and the Indian blanket is the state’s wildflower. Combined together, these images become the perfect chorus.

“It is with great sincerity and respect for Oklahoma’s natural landscape and its people that this very meaningful and special painting came to life,” Newsom said.
