STATEN ISLAND, NY – Nelly Etelzon, 26, remembers when she was a child and her parents placed a stepladder near their salon sink so she could wash clients’ hair.
For as long as she can remember, the Tottenville resident has helped her parents, Mike and Ada Etelzon – who immigrated to the United States from Russia more than 30 years ago – at Mike’s Barber Shop, where they are. owners, at Great Kills.
“I basically grew up in the hairdressing world,” she said. “I saw my parents cut their hair and work hard to make their business successful. … I have always been my father’s little assistant. My mom, back in Russia, used to do women’s hair, so she showed me a few things.
It wasn’t long before Etelzon decided to go to Paul Mitchell Beauty School to become a hairdresser.
“I wanted to keep the hair in our family,” she said.
After working for five years at other salons, she said she wanted more responsibility and run her own business, as she watched her parents do for so many years.
“I know it’s a lot of hard work. I watched my father for many years. But I really wanted to own my own business, ”Etelzon said.
That’s when she decided to open the Great Kills-based Always Beautiful hair salon, in a storefront on Hylan Boulevard, formerly occupied by a spa owned by her parents.
But that was right before the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) shut the world down. This put his plans on hold. It wasn’t until the fall of 2020 that she was able to start renovating the living room space. She was finally able to open the salon this week.
THE LIVING ROOM
Etelzon said she has eight stations for a myriad of hair and makeup services, from color and cuts to blow drys and makeup for special events. She is also looking to hire several stylists to work at the new salon.
“I love doing color, especially highlights and balayage. I am very creative and see hair as my canvas. … My favorite part of my job is seeing people happy when I totally transform their look. It’s the best feeling in the world to see other women feeling and looking amazing after I finish doing my hair, ”she said.
“I have the determination to work hard to achieve my dream of being a successful salon owner. I am a team player and I have a lot of passion for my job. I always take the time to be patient with customers and make sure they always leave with a smile, ”added Etelzon.
